I’ve learned so much about photographing a family welcoming a new baby. My philosophy is to always focus on the big sibling first. Like all new big siblings, Stevie has had just as rough of a time transitioning to a family of four as mom and dad. I try to immediately connect with Stevie to make her feel special, honored, and like this sessions is really about her and not her baby sister Rhys. Sometimes I don’t even get a chance to talk to mom or dad near the beginning of the session if the big sibling is naturally extroverted.

I also strive to make sure big sibling has choices: Do you want to sit with mom or dad? Would you like to hold baby first to take pictures by yourself? Giving big siblings a sense of control over the environment not only boosts cooperation, but more importantly empowers your child! Do kids sometimes tell me “no”? Yes. And I honor their no be offering new suggestions or giving them a moment to collect themselves with a trusted adult. Sometimes with more reserved big siblings, I will let the observe to the point where they naturally jump in. I want all of your children, not just the baby, to feel comfortable in the studio.

I’ve also worked with many nuerodiverse children and most of the time these tricks work for them as well. No matter your child’s neurotype, I always recommend that parents spend some time telling big sibling what’s going to happen, who they are going to meet, and what’s expected of them. Finally, I have daddy take big sibling on a date when their portion of the session is finished before capturing these squishy newborn images. These things seem so small to us, but really help your older child thrive at the studio.
