2014Giveaway Day 5: Armenian Folk Music
Operating a small business is work well loved but often hard and lonely with little support. So during my “big” birthday month, I’m going to be sharing with you some wonderful businesses and each of them will be giving away one thing to one lucky person.
I’m sharing these small businesses because my heart is with the business owner struggling to make it, but really passionate about serving people. Any given day, I may fit that description. 😉
Here is a link to all of the giveaways I’m hosting this month.
And now let me tell you a little bit about today’s small business owner.
Mariam Matossian
I really got to know Mariam last year when I photographed her newborn Lazaro. She has a beautiful family with the most darling little girls, little Lazaro, and the most hilariously sarcastic husband I’ve ever met.
Mariam has recorded some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. It’s Armenian Folk Music: songs her grandmother sang to her mother and her mother sang to her. Songs Mariam sings to her three beautiful little ones. I often listen while I’m editing a session. It’s so soothing and fun.
Mariam also tells these hard stories of the Armenian genocide intertwined with faithful hope on her blog and right alongside these precious snippets of her own life. It’s such wonderful reading.
Beautiful Armenian Folk Music
Mariam will be giving away some of her music to one lucky winner.

I love love love Mariam’s music. It’s surreal. Listening and watching her live, even better. It’s like listening to her soul.

Mariam’s music feels like all the hope, courage, and love that has sustained the Armenian people through centuries of joy and sorrow! So beautiful!!

Mariam’s music is timeless. I feel a very specific culture, and I feel its connection to original humanity. I feel belonging and connection and interest and awe. I feel the vastness of the great plan of the ages. And the intricacy of little things.

I meet Mariiam this summer and ever since I heard she sings I have wanted to hear her! Why? Because she is a beautiful person. She is an especially beautiful mother and so I would love to hear the songs passed down to her from her mothers before her! She makes me feel.

I love her voice…..what a talent! ..but I really love the ethnicity. The heritage. The history. The love. Reminds me of my family.

Thank you for the offer but I have bought both of her CDs (and I live in Canada so I don’t qualify). Her music is so very very intimate. I am not Armenian but the music speaks so clearly to all humanity in that we are all mothers, all lovers longing, all aware of death and life’s joys….My children love her songs though we don’t speak Armenian, and they have learned that mom cries at songs for their beauty whether the lyrics are happy or sad in nature.

When listening to Mariam’s music, I feel connections. Connections to my family members who were victims of genocide, connections to Armenian cultural history, connected to every Armenian living on this earth who has this same common experience.
